Artist Statement
When I went to art school in Los Angeles, artists in town were doing every conceivable kind of art using every imaginable material. It was no holds barred art making.. Possibly because of this early exposure to the exuberance and irreverence of the LA art world, I tend not to devote myself to one method or material.
I am an image or idea driven artist. Images will come to me, sometimes in dreams but often while I am awake. The images have a numinous quality, some of which they loose during translation into physical form. This is a natural part of the process of making these ideas in to paintings or sculpture. However the integrity of the idea must be honored during the process.
I care deeply about the natural world, which is not always understood or valued in our culture. Nature is extremely complex, full of tiny organisms people can't see, and dependant on relationships people usually don't have the time to perceive. A park for instance is a part of nature, but missing the integral complexity and wildness it might have had before cultivation. I feel that the human psyche also has this wildness and complexity. This element intrigues and inspires me. It is the source for the numinous quality I try to preserve and serve in my work.
